About us
Sutherland Shire Reconciliation Incorporated

(formerly Sutherland Shire Citizens for Native Title and Reconciliation – SSCNTaR) was formed in 1997 by concerned citizens of this region. It is an organisational member of the NSW Reconciliation Council, and as such is a part of the People’s Movement for Reconciliation.
Our vision is to foster relationships, understanding and respect between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. We seek to work with all who see the Reconciliation process as the way forward to a better future for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians alike.
We aim to
-
Work towards a society in which the marginalised and most vulnerable are treated with compassion, and in which this compassion is reflected at the national level.
-
Work with local Aboriginal community, and wider community with compatible aims.
-
Promote awareness and understanding of a broad range of issues relating to these goals through community educational days
-
Join with others to promote these goals.
-
Work to make Reconciliation a reality in Sutherland Shire by supporting Aboriginal people’s initiatives.
PROJECTS
Dharawal Picture Dictionary
Throughout 2023 SSR donated 14,000 copies of the Dharawal Picture Dictionary free to primary schools in the Sutherland Shire to increase local knowledge and understanding of the culture and language. We thank our major sponsor of this project, ANSTO, who have been supportive of the work of SSR for many years.
The Dharawal Picture Dictionary is a colouring book wiht Dharwal words and the corresponding English words and drawings based on local cae drawings and rock carving found in the Sutherland Shire. The Book was created and compliled by First Nations people on the SSR Committee with the guidance and editing of local Aboriginal Knowledge holder, Bruce Howell and with help with the drawings from another local Knowledge Holder, Rick O’Brien, and the Strong Sister Group.
