The Appin Massacre Memorial Ceremony is an annual event hosted by the Winga Myamly Reconciliation Group in honour of the Dharawal People who perished in the massacre of 1816.

Remembering • Healing • Reconciliation


The Massacre of men, women and children of the Dharawal Nation occurred in the Appin area on 17 April 1816. This memorial ceremony is hosted each year on the Sunday nearest to this anniversary by The Winga Myamly Reconciliation Group and the Aboriginal Communities of Macarthur.


Remembering the Appin Massacre is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal people to learn and walk together with the Aboriginal community. Reconciliation occurs through listening. This event has grown in size over the past few decades and is supported by many people and organisations.


Cataract Dam Picnic Area is a 40 minute drive South from Sutherland. A free BBQ lunch is offered and we do our best to cater for everyone – but you might like to opt to bring a picnic – especially if you have special dietary requirements. Please bring sun protection. The event includes a short…
