Local news reports on our Dharawal Picture Dictionary

Our local independent newspaper The St George and Sutherland Shire Leader has reported on our Dharawal Picture Dictionary. Children across our Shire now have access to Dharawal language. We hope they learn about the language and take pride in our rich continuing culture.

From the article..

"Fourteen thousand copies of the Dharawal Picture Dictionary have been distributed free to schools in Sutherland Shire to help increase local knowledge and understanding of the culture and language.

The initiative is the work of Sutherland Shire Reconciliation (SSR), a member organisation of Reconciliation NSW, made up of both First Nations and non-Indigenous people working together to advance reconciliation in the community...."

Sutherland Shire Reconciliation acknowledges the Dharawal language speaking people of the Gweagal and Norongerragal clans, as the traditional custodians of the lands within the Sutherland Shire. We are grateful for their immemorial care of the lands and waterways on which we live and work.

'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander’, ‘First Nations,’ ‘Aboriginal‘ and ‘Indigenous’ are used interchangeably on this website to refer to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia, their arts and their cultures. We understand that some may not be comfortable with these words. Please understand, only respect is meant.
