National Sorry Day, the National Day of Healing,
May 26th.
Silver Beach, Kurnell, 6.30am
SORRY DAY
At dawn, we stood together acknowledging the harrowing truth of those we have come to know as The Stolen Generation.
Personal accounts were shared.
The retelling of one’s own traumatic history is not easy. The survivors do so knowing that sharing their accounts of being stolen and the enduring impacts is part of our country’s truth-telling and healing.
'Kitch' who shared part of his story put a special focus on “those who have passed and helped the young fellas that came out of the homes”. He gave personal gratitude to Father Ted Kennedy, Mum Shirl, Uncle Bobby McCleod, Sister Kay, Uncle Bob Bellear, and Burnum Burnum.
There is so much to Kitch’s story. With his guidance, we will share more of his important history of being stolen.
A special thank you to:
• Aunty Dolly for the Welcome to Country and for sharing some of her own story.
• Graham for the smoking ceremony
• Noeleen Timbery, Gweagal Woman and chair of La Perouse Aboriginal Land Council for attending.
• Reconciliation NSW for funding this morning’s vigil.
• Katherine Vavahea who sang with heart her song “Rise up”
• Jo from Goanna Hut who provided delicious cakes and slices with a modern Koori Fusion.
• A big shout out to Silver Beach Café for hosting us after the vigil.
And finally, thank you to all who attended in solidarity and with heart
With the rising of the Sun we look forward to healing and a better future
