A third flagpole to be placed on the arch of the Sydney Harbour Bridge so that all three flags – the Australian Flag, the NSW Flag and the Aboriginal Flag – may all be flown permanently. Cheree Toka, initiator of this petition
1. The Aboriginal Flag symbolises the oldest, continuous civilisation in human history of which Australia and all Australians can be justifiably proud. The Sydney Harbour Bridge links Gadigal Country in the south with Cammeraygal Country in the north.
2. The granite used in the Sydney Harbour Bridge’s pylons and piers was cut from quarriesin the NSW south-coast area of Moruya – in Yuin Country. Aboriginal men played an important role in thequarrying of this granite.
3. There are currently only two flagpoles atop the Bridge and, as the Australian Flagis flown permanently, the NSW Flag has to be removed four times a year in order for the Aboriginal Flag tobe flown for a total of 18 days: 26th January 1 day National Apology Day 1 day: (13th Feb) Reconciliation Week 8 days: (28th May – 3rd June) NAIDOC Week 8 days: (1st Sun to Sun in July)
4. The Australian, NSW and Aboriginal Flags are flown permanently from three flagpoles outside NSW Parliament House and NSW Government House plus the Sydney Town Hall. 5. NSW Local Government 2018 Conference @ Albury: Resolution: “That LgovNSW calls on the NSW Government to support the implementation of a protocol for the permanent flying of the Indigenous Flag, alongside the Australian Flag and the NSW State Flag, from Sydney Harbour Bridge.”
