Reconciliation Week 2025

Updated: May 16

Reconciliation Week is fast approaching. This year's theme Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

Sutherland Shire Reconciliation is proud to support truth telling and remembrance through two significant events.Sorry Day Dawn Vigil - Sunday 25th May. Kurnell 6.30amThis event commemorates National Sorry Day. This solemn gathering offers a time for reflection, remembrance, and acknowledgment of the Stolen Generations.

National Sorry Day, officially the National Day of Healing, is held each year on May 26 (We are holding our vigil on Sunday, 25 May, to encourage greater community participation). The day acknowledges the lasting effects of the forced removal of First Nations children. It coincides with the anniversary of the "Bringing Them Home" report, which exposed the widespread injustices experienced by the Stolen Generations and called for recognition, apology, and healing.

Servant or Slave. Film screening followed by a Q&A. Hazelhurst Gallery. Saturday, 31st of May 12.30 pm.

This confronting film shares the true stories of five Aboriginal women from the Stolen Generations. Forcibly removed from their families as children, they reveal the hidden realities of their lives, being placed in institutions or homes where they were denied freedom, education, and basic rights, and subjected to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. The conditions they endured amounted to a system of secret slavery, a truth too often left out of mainstream history.

This important event, a partnership between Sutherland Shire Reconciliation and Sutherland Shire Council, invites the community to listen, learn, and participate in meaningful dialogue.

The film is M-rated and is not recommended for viewers under the age of 15.

Sutherland Shire Reconciliation acknowledges the Dharawal language speaking people of the Gweagal and Norongerragal clans, as the traditional custodians of the lands within the Sutherland Shire. We are grateful for their immemorial care of the lands and waterways on which we live and work.
